Frequently asked questions

Answers to some common questions are below. If you have any other questions please don’t hesitate to contact us.

  • Do I need any previous experience to attend a workshop?

We are currently running an introductory workshop to enable women to gain knowledge and experience on a range of tools and machinery found in our workshop.  No prior knowledge is needed for this.  This workshop is also required to become a Member of WomenzShed. More details about Membership can be found here.

  • Do I need to bring tools?

We provide all the tools you will need, unless stated otherwise.

  • What happens if I cancel my workshop?

Cancellations advised more than ten days from the workshop will receive a full refund (less the Humanitix booking fee). Between ten days and 48 hours before the workshop, we offer a 50% refund to cover administration fees and loss of space. Cancellations advised within 48 hours are not eligible for a refund, or a transfer to another workshop time unless we are able to fill the vacancy from any waiting list we are holding. Transferred workshops are not refunded. Occasionally, we are unable to reach the minimum numbers required for a workshop to go ahead, or the instructor may become unwell and we must cancel at short notice. If this should happen, we will give you as much notice as we can and will, of course, provide you with a refund of your workshop cost.

  • What is PPE and do I need to bring my own?

PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment. For woodwork, it includes ear defenders, eye protection, dust masks and gloves. We provide this for you but you are welcome to bring your own.  We especially recommend buying your own quality respiratory protection.

  • What should I wear to attend a workshop?

Not your Sunday best! Wood workshops by their nature are pretty dusty places. Wear close fitting clothing, closed in shoes (sneakers are fine), tie back long hair and don't wear dangly things eg jewellery that could get caught in machinery.

  • Where are workshops run?

We usually run workshops at the Auckland Central Community Shed in Sandringham.

We are on the look out for other locations and will announce news about this through our newsletter and social media, so please sign up if you want to see us in your town.
